Callie Ray Bowens of Greenburgh Passes at 80
Callie Ray Bowens of Greenburgh, New York passed away peacefully at home on May 14, 2023 at the age of 80. He was born on January 14, 1943 in Gastonia, North Carolina to William Bowens and Edna (Robbins) Bowens, who preceded him in death.
Following graduation from Gastonia High School in 1962, Callie moved to White Plains, NY at the recommendation of friends. He was employed in the pressroom at Gannett News, White Plains. His career was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. After serving, he returned to his position at Gannett, earned a position as pressroom supervisor, and remained there until his retirement.
Callie Bowens and Carolyn Carelock were blessed to meet each other to make their dreams become a reality. They married July 6, 1983 and enjoyed much happiness and success.
Callie enjoyed all sports, especially bowling and baseball, and loved listening to music, with a special fondness for the Motown sound. He possessed a “green thumb extraordinaire” and maintained beautiful gardens at his home, that were framed by precision shaped hedges and flowering trees. Callie also enjoyed traveling and loved the company of family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Carolyn Carelock-Bowens, his brother David Wilson, his sister Hazel Williams, sister-in-law Barbara Ann Carelock (Lawrence White), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
